BHP EYES LARGE-SCALE COPPER EXPLORATION IN ZAMBIA

Global mining giant, BHP has expressed interest in undertaking large-scale copper exploration in Zambia.

Speaking during a high-level meeting in Lusaka, BHP Head of Global Generative Exploration, Campbell McCuaig, said the firm is increasingly focused on identifying large copper deposits that are difficult to detect using traditional exploration methods.

Mr. McCuaig noted that many of the copper deposits are buried deep underground or concealed beneath geological cover, making them harder to discover.

“To overcome these challenges, BHP is employing advanced geological techniques and large-scale data analysis to identify what are known as mineral systems the combination of geological processes that lead to the formation of major copper deposits,” Mr. McCuaig explained.

He also applauded Zambia’s recent efforts to improve access to geo-science data, including the government backed airborne geophysical surveys and the digitization of geological information.

“These initiatives are critical in attracting global investment into the mining sector,”he said.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary, Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, said collaboration with BHP aligns with the government’s goal of increasing copper production and attracting major international investors.

“Stronger collaboration between government, global mining companies, and local exploration firms will be essential in unlocking new mineral districts and driving long-term growth,” Dr. Kabeta added.

He said Zambia remains one of the world’s most prospective regions for copper, adding that ongoing reforms are aimed at ensuring the country translates its mineral potential into tangible economic benefits.

“The government is prioritizing early-stage exploration, improved access to geological data, and increased participation of local companies in global mining initiatives,” Dr. Kabeta stated.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting responsible and sustainable investment in the sector.

The meeting also focused on how Zambia can better align with modern global exploration strategies, including the use of advanced geo-science data and a mineral systems approach to identify large copper deposits located at depth or beneath geological cover.
