Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has warned illegal miners to cease unauthorized operations and desist from engaging in destructive activity on Kafue River.

ZEMA Manager Corporate Affairs, Ruth Kamwi said findings of a recent inspection conducted on the Kafue River banks in Chingola and Chililabomnwe districts, revealed significant disturbances to the water course, increased turbidity, and potential impacts on water quality, thereby posing serious threats to the ecosystem and biodiversity

Mrs. Kamwi said the inspection was conducted following reports of illegal mining activities in Hippo Pool area.

“ZEMA hereby orders all individuals and companies engaged in unauthorised mining activities in the area to cease and desist immediately.”

“These activities are not only illegal Hippo Pool area, but also pose significant environmental risks, including destruction of habitats and loss of biodiversity,pollution of water sources, and increased risk of soil erosion,” Mrs. Kamwi stated.

She urged all stakeholders to report any further instances of illegal mining activities to ZEMA, warning that failure to comply with environmental regulations will result in swift action, including penalties and prosecution.

“ZEMA remains committed to protecting Zambia’s environment and natural resources. We will continue to work with communities, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that those responsible for environmental degradation are held accountable,” she added.
