Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, has announced that ZCCM-IH will soon commence the construction of access roads at Kikonge Mine in Mufumbwe District.
Paul Kabuswe said the move forms part of Government’s broader efforts to formalize artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) activities and restore order in the mine area.
Mr. Kabuswe added that the move also signals Government’s commitment to structured and regulated mining operations, following growing security concerns linked to illegal mining.
He noted that illegal mining activities in Mufumbwe had led to the emergence of small militia groups, a development he described as alarming and a threat to national security.
“Illegal mining poses a serious security risk to our country. The rise of militia groups in Mufumbwe was deeply concerning,” Mr. Kabuswe stated.
He said Government is therefore resolute in ensuring that sanity is restored and that all mining activities are conducted within the confines of the law.
Mr. Kabuswe emphasized that formalization of the artisanal mining sector remains the sustainable solution to curbing illegal activities.
The Minister cited the example of Ghana, which significantly increased gold revenue from US$160 Million to US$11 Billion after formalizing its artisanal miners and establishing a Gold Board.
“The Zambian Government has trained 470 mining cooperatives across two sites in Mufumbwe and Mpika, representing approximately 47,000 individuals. The training focuses on responsible mining practices, environmental protection, safety compliance, and value addition,” he added.
Mr. Kabuswe reaffirmed government’s dedication to safeguarding lives, protecting the environment, and ensuring that Zambia’s mineral resources are harnessed for the benefit of all citizens.
