Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary has reiterated Zambia’s commitment to finding an amicable solution to the security crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Chiefs of Defence Forces from the 12 member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) are meeting in Livingstone to try and find solutions to the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the DRC
Speaking when he opened the Extraordinary Meeting of Chiefs of Defence Forces this morning Maambo Haamaundu said Zambia pledges to work tirelessly for peace in the DRC and the wider region
Mr. Haamaundu stated the country remains dedicated to supporting peace processes, contributing to regional initiatives and hosting platforms for dialogue and cooperation.
“We believe that the security of one member state is inseparable from the security of all,” Mr. Haamaundu said.
He urged the Chiefs of Defence Forces to keep in mind the hopes and aspirations of the millions of men and women and children who look up to them for protection.
At the same meeting, ICGLR Executive Secretary, Dr. Mubita Luwabelwa expressed concern over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The ICGLR is deeply concerned that after the signing of the Washington Accord last month, the capture of the town of Uvira led to mass displacements of people,” he stressed.
Dr. Luwabelwa urged the Chiefs of Defence Forces to find tangible solutions to end the hostilities saying the conflict has far reaching regional implications.
According to a statement issued by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer, Paul Shalala, Zambia Army Commander Lt Gen Geoffrey Zyeele is also attending the meeting.
