Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) and Commuter Rights Association of Zambia (CRA) have called for immediate action against overcharging by drivers working for a named online taxi company.
In a joint statement, ZACA Executive Secretary Juba Sakala and CRAZ Chairman Aaron Kamuti, expressed concern on the growing reports from concerned consumers and commuters regarding an illegal trend involving the online taxi drivers.
“It has come to our attention that some drivers are demanding higher fares than those displayed and charged by the official online system.”
“This practice not only undermines consumer rights but also constitutes extortion, which is a serious violation of the law and the principles of fair business conduct,” the duo said.
They reminded all stakeholders that once a fare is set by the digital platform and accepted by both parties, it becomes a binding agreement.,therefore any additional or unauthorized charges by the driver are illegal, unethical, and unacceptable.
“We therefore urgently call upon the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and the owners or operators of the online taxi platform to immediately investigate and put an end to this exploitative practice. “
“Consumers must be protected from unfair treatment, especially in the growing digital transport sector. Those who feel they are making loses can leave the system and revert to their old way of doing business,” they added.
The two Associations reaffirmed their commitment to work with regulators, service providers, and consumers to ensure transparency, accountability, and respect for commuter rights.
