WARMA URGES COMMUNITIES ALONG LAKE TANGANYIKA TO RELOCATE VALUABLES AMID RAPID RISE IN WATER LEVELS

By Cecilia Chiluba

Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) has cautioned communities along Lake Tanganyika to relocate valuables and essential assets to higher ground in light of rapid and concerning rise in water levels.

WARMA has observed that the lake’s levels are increasing at an alarming rate, surpassing historical records and causing extensive flooding in areas that were previously not affected.

Authority Senior Public Relations and Communications Officer, Smart Kalaluka said WARMA forecast indicate that water levels are expected to peak around June 2025.

Mr. Kalaluka stated that over the past three rainy seasons, schools, homes and other lake-shore infrastructure have been submerged, and many more properties remain at risk.

“An analysis of water elevation data from 1993 to 2025 reveals that the lake has risen more than 3.7 meters above its lowest recorded level in 2006, with an additional increase of approximately 30 centimeters anticipated by mid-June 2025.

“Residents in Mpulungu and Nsama districts, particularly those in Mpulungu Harbour, Kasaba Bay, Nsumbu Bay, Nkamba Bay, Chituta Bay, Mbete Bay and other lakeshore communities, are urged to remain vigilant and follow official WARMA updates and community alerts,” Mr. Kalaluka stated.

He added that the Authority is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to safeguarding water resources and public safety.

“We will continue to issue timely updates and work with local authorities to mitigate risks.”

“We urge public cooperation in navigating this environmental challenge,” he added.

Lake Tanganyika is shared by four countries including Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania, and Zambia.

The lake has a significant impact on the communities living along its shores, particularly in Mpulungu and Nsama, who largely depend on the lake for fishing and other livelihoods.
