Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock says the suspension of fishing activities along Kafue River in Central and Copperbelt provinces due to heavy metal contamination remains in full effect.
The suspension was effected on 3rd April 2025, after scientific assessments by the Central Veterinary Research Institute (CVRI) and the University of Zambia (UNZA) – School of Veterinary Medicine confirmed the presence of heavy metal contamination caused by pollution from Sino Metals in Kitwe.
The pollution affected Mwambashi Stream, a major tributary of the Kafue River, and subsequently impacted aquatic life and the livelihoods of approximately 300,000 households.
Ministry’s Principal Public Relations Officer Benny Munyama said in a statement that ongoing monitoring efforts indicate that the situation is gradually normalizing.
“Since the incident, the Ministry, through the Department of Fisheries, has enhanced water quality monitoring and biosecurity protocols to safeguard both human and aquatic life.”
“While improvements have been noted, the suspension of fishing activities remains in full effect,” Mr. Munyama stated.
He urged communities to continue reporting any fish deaths or unusual activities along the river, as this is crucial for informed decision-making.
Mr. Munyama said if the current trend continues, the Ministry anticipates lifting the suspension within the course of next month.
“A formal announcement will be made in due course. The Ministry remains committed to ensuring the safety and sustainability of our fisheries resources,” he added.
