Siavonga Town Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Siavonga Market Committee to facilitate the temporary relocation of traders operating at Chimutengo Market to pave way for the construction of a new market shelter.

Construction at Chimutengo Market is scheduled to begin within the coming week and a joint oversight team from Siavonga Town Council and Market Committee representatives, will conduct regular progress reviews to ensure the project stays on track.

Council Public Relations Officer Veronica Katongo, said the relocation will allow construction works to begin at the current Chimutengo Market site.

Ms. Katongo disclosed that under the agreement, traders will be temporarily moved to the Play Park, effective immediately, for a minimum period of three months.

“This strategic move is designed to ensure the continuity of business operations while making room for the development of a modern trading facility that meets acceptable infrastructure and safety standards,” Ms. Katongo explained.

She said the MoU reflects a joint commitment to development and the protection of local livelihoods.

Ms. Katongo added that the Council will provide essential amenities at the temporary location, including sanitation facilities, shelter, and security services.

And speaking during the signing ceremony, Council Chairperson Given Kwapu praised the collaborative approach taken by the Market Committee and other stakeholders.

“This relocation marks a significant milestone in our efforts to create a safe and modern trading environment,” Mr. Kwapu said.

“We are putting the well-being of our traders first, even as we implement long-overdue improvements that will benefit the entire Siavonga community. I urge all traders to cooperate fully during this transition.”
