POLICE WITHDRAW FROM KIKONGE GOLD MINE AREA AFTER COMPLETING OPERATION

Zambia Police Service has confirmed that officers deployed to the Kikonge Gold Mine operational area in Mufumbwe District, have withdrawn following the completion of their duties.

Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said in a statement that the operation commenced in May 2025, in line with an approved operational order and plan.

Mr. Chilabi explained that during the withdrawal process, officers experienced temporary mobility challenges due to flooding of the Musonweji River and the surrounding swampy terrain.

He noted that the situation rendered access roads impassable to motor vehicles, briefly preventing the officers from connecting to the main road network.

“To ensure safe movement, the Zambia Air Force was engaged to provide aerial support to transport the officers across the flooded area. This support enabled them to safely cross and reconnect with the M8 road network,” he stated.

Mr. Chilabi clarified that despite the temporary road and terrain challenges, all deployed officers had sufficient rations and operational necessities, contrary to circulating media reports.

“The Zambia Police Service also assures the public that it continues to execute its constitutional mandate of maintaining law and order, preventing and detecting crime, and conducting security operations in Mufumbwe and other districts.”

He further expressed gratitude to the Zambia Air Force for the timely provision of operational air support and the effective inter-agency cooperation.
