MQHZ HAILS INTRODUCTION OF MALARIA VACCINE FOR CHILDREN

Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has hailed the government for the launch and introduction of malaria vaccine targeting over 500, 000 children under the age of five.

Ministry of Health, recently launched the malaria vaccine R21/Matrix-M,as part of its Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), marking a historic milestone in the country’s fight against malaria.

Over 500,000 children aged 6–8 months will be vaccinated in the months following the launch.

Organization Director General Dr. Quince Mwabu told Money News in an interview that the milestone represents a major step forward in the nation’s on-going fight against malaria.

Dr. Mwabu stated that for many years, the organization has been advocating for comprehensive and innovative strategies to reduce malaria cases, particularly among most vulnerable populations such as infants and young children.

“The introduction of this vaccine demonstrates the government’s strong commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of every Zambian child, and we are proud to see our collective efforts with partners, communities, and the health sector bearing fruit,” Dr. Mwabu stated.

He said malaria remains a significant public health challenge in Zambia, accounting for thousands of preventable illnesses and deaths annually.

Dr. Mwabu noted that the introduction of the vaccine alongside continued use of insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying, and prompt diagnosis and treatment will significantly contribute to reducing malaria transmission and mortality rates.

“It means fewer hospital admissions, fewer families losing loved ones to preventable disease, and a stronger, healthier generation ready to contribute to the nation’s growth and development,” he added.

He added that the malaria vaccine is not only a medical breakthrough but a social and economic victory that will improve productivity, reduce healthcare costs, and enhance the quality of life for millions of Zambians.
