Green Living Movement in partnership with the Glasco Foundation, has invested over K1 million towards the drilling and equipping of a mechanized borehole in Jongola ward of Gwembe District, Southern Province.
The investment also includes the establishment of a community garden as well as purchasing of chemicals to fight pests in the garden.
Speaking during an interaction with some community members in Jongola ward, Movement Field Officer, Larry Namadula said the initiative is supporting over 200 households in the ward.
Mr. Namadula explained that the garden is used for growing of various crops such as vegetables, sunflowers, maize, and seedlings.
“This is garden that is funded by Glasco Foundation is meant to help the community to do their horticultural production from January to December the whole year.”
“We are implementing a project called Climate Resilient Communities Project where we want communities to be resilient to issues of climate change. So we have a number of crops that are planted in this garden, such as maize, okra, cabbage and sunflower,” Mr. Namadula explained.
Meanwhile, Jongola Ward Councillor, Misper Hamuleya, thanked the two organizations for investing such a huge amount of money in his ward.
Mr. Hamuleya noted that the coming of this project in his ward has helped a lot of vulnerable families who have been struggling with income.
“The project also addresses the economic challenges faced by many residents,” he said.
And some of the beneficiaries applauded the organization for providing them with income and valuable knowledge on crop cultivation.
They reiterated that the project has come at the right time when the District has been severely affected by dry spell as well of floods which wiped out the only crops which people had grown.
