GOVT EXPECTS SWIFT COMMENCEMENT OF US$1.4 BILLION TAZARA PROJECT

Minister of Transport and Logistics says Government expects rehabilitation works on the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) to commence soon following last year’s groundbreaking ceremony.

On September 29, 2025, Zambia, Tanzania and China signed a US$1.4 billion TAZARA Revitalization Agreement.

This was followed by a groundbreaking ceremony on November 20, 2025, officiated in Lusaka by President Hakainde Hichilema and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

Speaking after a meeting with Vice President of China Railway Construction Corporation Sun Liqiang, Frank Tayali said the TAZARA revitalization project is a priority for both Government and the Zambian people.

“Once revitalized, TAZARA will help reduce the transportation cost of heavy goods,” Mr. Tayali noted.

And Mr. Sun acknowledged the importance of the project for both Zambia and China, emphasizing the need to commence works quickly.

“China Railway Construction Corporation is almost complete with designs that will give TAZARA a new look,” he said.

The project is expected to improve logistics for copper exports, enhance trade, and create an economic “belt of prosperity” along the railway line.
