Dickson Jere Defends ABSA Marathon, Says Event Brings Economic Value

The just-ended ABSA Marathon 2025 has sparked mixed reactions among Lusaka residents after major roads were closed to accommodate the annual event.

While some motorists expressed frustration, sports administrator Dickson Jere has urged the public to view the marathon as more than a sporting activity—arguing it is a major economic opportunity for Zambia.

Posting on his official Facebook page, Jere emphasized that marathons are big business globally, citing iconic races in London, Berlin, New York, Sydney, and Tokyo that equally shut down major city roads but generate significant returns.

“The ABSA Marathon is the only Zambian event with World Athletics certification and has been placed on the global calendar this year. That’s why the 2025 edition attracted over 7,500 participants, including runners from nearly 20 countries,” he noted.

According to Jere, the marathon directly boosts sectors such as hospitality and tourism. He pointed to hotels and lodges recording higher occupancy rates over the weekend, alongside local entrepreneurs who took advantage of the event.

“I found two young boys from Harare who came to sell merchandise at the marathon. They saw opportunities. Where are our own people?” he asked.

Beyond business, the event also served as a platform for cultural exchange, entertainment, and social causes. Local artist Mampi performed for the crowds, while advocacy groups used the platform to raise awareness and funds for menstrual health campaigns.

Jere commended ABSA, Lusaka City Council, and the Lusaka Fitness Squad for improving public communication about road closures this year, noting that such inconveniences are common in major marathon cities worldwide.

He urged more Zambians to embrace the event, either as participants or spectators, stressing that it showcases Lusaka internationally and unites citizens beyond politics, religion, and tribe.
