Zambia’s lone medal at the inaugural ANOCA School Games in Algeria was not just a personal triumph for Sasha Kapumpa — it was a powerful testament to the impact of the Teulings Youth Sports League, which continues to shape young athletes into international competitors.
The 16-year-old judoka, who won bronze in judo, is a proud product of the OYDC Zambia Teulings Youth League, a program that has become one of the most effective grassroots sports development models in the country. Sasha’s journey from the local judo mats at OYDC to the continental stage highlights how structured youth competitions, mentorship, and exposure can transform potential into podium success.
OYDC Zambia Programmes Manager Mwange Kampamba said Sasha’s medal was not only a victory for her but also a validation of the Teulings model.
“Producing a medal is very exciting for OYDC and the Teulings. We are very proud of Sasha and will continue to support our athletes to win even more medals,” Kampamba said.
Sasha herself credited the Teulings League for her growth, describing it as the foundation that gave her international exposure and confidence.
“I’m very happy with the Teulings because it has provided me with an opportunity to be part of this team. I’ll work harder to win gold next time,” she said.
Mwape Zulu, Zambia’s Chef de Mission, said the experience was invaluable for all participants, stressing the need for continued investment in youth development programs like Teulings to expand Zambia’s international footprint.
For Sasha, her medal marks the beginning of a promising sporting journey — and for the Teulings Youth League, it reaffirms its role as a launchpad for young Zambian athletes, blending opportunity, mentorship, and exposure to produce stars who can compete with the best on the continent.
The bronze medal may be Zambia’s only one from Algeria, but its message is golden — grassroots investment works.
