A new report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Zambia has underscored the telecommunications sector’s role as a catalyst for economic growth and social inclusion.
The inaugural PwC Zambia Telecommunications Survey Report 2025, presents a thriving industry driven by technological advancements and robust government support.
Officially unveiled by Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, in Lusaka today, the Report has revealed that mobile money transactions have approached K4 billion, underscoring the critical role of digital financial services.
Mr. Mutati described the report as a landmark achievement in the country’s digital journey, positioning PwC Zambia as a thought leader in telecommunications analytics.
“The insights provided positions PwC as a leader in analytical thought within the telecommunications sector,” Mr. Mutati said.
And GSMA Zambia, Chairperson Jason Mwanza, highlighted the importance of sector visibility and continued innovation.
Meanwhile, Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) Director General Collins Mbulo, who was represented by Director, Bernard Banda highlighted key achievements, noting that mobile penetration exceeds 100% and internet connections approach 14 million, contributing significantly to economic growth and social development.
While celebrating successes, he pointed out challenges such as energy supply constraints, regulatory gaps, and cybersecurity threats, calling for collaboration among stakeholders to address these issues.
“ZICTA remains committed to promoting inclusive digital connectivity by expanding infrastructure in underserved areas, ensuring affordable digital services, and fostering a supportive regulatory environment,” he said.
PwC Country Partner, Andrew Chibuye, presented the report whose key findings, indicate that the country’s ICT sector represents 20% of total tax revenue, confirming its position as the fastest-growing industry in the economy.
Employment insights reveal over 4 million jobs in the informal sector, while 53% of telecommunications employment is anchored by major local companies, ensuring local economic empowerment.
The report outlines bold strategic priorities to sustain this momentum such as the 5G Rollout, which aims to support artificial intelligence advancements. The report further encourages support for emerging innovators and outlines legislative initiatives aimed at fostering growth within the sector.
Other strategic future priorities include cyber resilience, customer experience, infrastructure collaboration and legal framework.
Under customer experience, the focus will be on improving the quality and overall experience for citizens, introducing smart solutions to enhance infrastructure, such as solar-powered communication towers in Ngabwe and Lavushimanda.
