Centre for Reproductive Health and Education (CRHE) has called on government to show bold leadership and a strong commitment to accountability, transparency, and systemic reform in the wake of serious corruption allegations in the healthcare sector.
The call follows the U.S. government’s withdrawal of $50 million in health sector funding, citing concerns over corruption and mismanagement at Zambia’s Ministry of Health.
In a statement, CRHE demanded the immediate release of audit findings from the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Authority (ZAMMSA), which were initiated after the disappearance of containers filled with medical supplies, and were later discovered in a warehouse in Lusaka’s Makeni area.
“This transparency is crucial in building trust and ensuring the public is fully informed about the extent of the issue,” the organization stated.
“Publishing the audit findings would be a clear signal that the government is committed to accountability and openness.”
It also stressed the need for the government to thoroughly investigate and prosecute senior officials suspected of involvement in the theft of medical supplies.
“This is essential to ensure that those responsible for corruption are held accountable and that the rule of law prevails,” CRHE said.
CRHE emphasized that any investigative and prosecutorial process must be transparent, impartial, and exhaustive.
The organization further urged the government to strengthen supply chain management and improve coordination with donor partners to prevent future mismanagement.
“CRHE believes that bolstering these systems is key to minimizing corruption and ensuring that medicines and other essential health supplies are distributed effectively,” it added.
CRHE appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to take decisive action and exhibit strong leadership in addressing the crisis.
“The President’s leadership is critical in driving reforms and ensuring that the healthcare sector operates with transparency and accountability,” it stated.
“By taking bold steps, the President can affirm his commitment to safeguarding public resources and enhancing the well-being of all Zambians.”
The organization further called on the government to implement robust anti-corruption policies and ensure equitable access to healthcare services.
CRHE said these reforms should focus on transparency, accountability, and fairness.
“The health and lives of Zambians depend on the government’s ability to protect public resources,” CRHE stressed.
“Healthcare mismanagement has dire consequences, and the trust of citizens and donor partners must not be taken for granted.”
