Zambia’s Ambassador to Japan, has called on Japanese investors to be part of the Grow Zambia Agenda by investing in the country’s key priority sectors.
The Grow Zambia Agenda is the Government’s drive to accelerate economic growth, increase productivity, attract investment and create jobs by unlocking opportunities across key sectors of the economy for the benefit of Zambians.
Dr. Tobias Mulimbika said Zambia’s economy is on a positive trajectory with renewed opportunities for investment in sectors such as mining, agriculture, tourism, energy among others.
Speaking in Tokyo during Tourism EXPO Japan (TEJ) 2026, where Zambia is showcasing its tourism attractions, investment opportunities and rich cultural heritage, Dr. Mulimbika stated that the country’s strengthened economic position and improved investor confidence make Zambia an increasingly attractive destination for Japanese investment.
The Ambassador said the progress made in restructuring Zambia’s debt has created greater fiscal space for Government to mobilize resources towards social and economic development, while strengthening confidence among investors.
“Government has worked very hard to ensure that the debt is restructured, and now it is almost completely restructured. That gives us space to mobilize resources to invest in social sectors, but also gives confidence to investors coming to invest in Zambia that they are entering an environment where they can put in their money and be assured of having a return on their money,” Dr. Mulimbika stated.
He encouraged Japanese companies to take advantage of Zambia’s significant investment opportunities, particularly in areas associated with the global green transition.
“When you talk of the green transition, basically they will have access to critical minerals, as Zambia is known for copper production, and we have the best environment for agriculture production. Of course, we are affected, as everyone else, by climate change, but this is where Japan comes in in terms of their technology, focusing on crops or technologies or systems that can help us grow crops in drought-stressed or heat-stressed conditions, including where there are floods,” he added.
Dr. Mulimbika further said the current environment was ripe for investment by Japanese companies, noting Zambia’s mineral wealth, agricultural potential and opportunities arising from the global transition towards greener economies.
He noted that Government is focused on the Grow Zambia Agenda, which seeks to increase economic growth and productivity, and encouraged Japanese companies to take advantage of the conducive business environment and invest in Zambia.
Meanwhile, Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA) Chief Marketing Officer, Amanda Chipungu said Zambia’s participation at Tourism EXPO Japan is strategically aimed at increasing awareness of the country and stimulating travel from Japan.
Ms. Chipungu stated that the ZTA delegation is using the Expo to engage Japanese tourism stakeholders and showcase Zambia’s diverse tourism offering, including its rich cultural heritage, while creating opportunities for the private sector to generate travel leads and secure actual bookings.
“The participation also highlights investment opportunities in the tourism sector, particularly at attractions that require accommodation, infrastructure and other amenities. She noted that tourism has strong linkages with sectors such as agriculture, transport, health, entertainment and other areas of the economy,” she stated.
Ms. Chipungu encouraged Japanese travellers to take advantage of the country’s visa waiver arrangements and experience the country’s diverse attractions and authentic cultural heritage.
Zambia is participating in the Tourism EXPO Japan 2026, being held at Tokyo Big Sight from 24–27 September 2026 under the theme “The Changing Nature of Travel.” The Expo provides an important platform for destinations, tourism businesses and industry stakeholders from Japan and around the world to establish partnerships, promote tourism and explore new business opportunities.
