Acting Information and Media Permanent Secretary has urged journalists to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly as the technology can lead to the spread of misinformation.

Speaking during the World Press Freedom Day Pre-Commemoration Conference in Lusaka, Bernard Domingo, noted that while AI presents opportunities, Journalists must be equipped with the skills to use the technology ethically, ensuring that editorial judgment remains central to news reporting.

Mr. Domingo said the Government is committed to creating a functional and responsive media environment across the country in the era of AI.

“Media houses should adopt AI ethics guidelines to safeguard accuracy, fairness, and accountability,” Mr. Domingo stated.

He emphasized that Zambia should not only be a consumer of technological advancements but also become a leader in ethical, democratic and inclusive media innovation.

Mr. Domingo further called on media practitioners to lead public education initiatives and help citizens critically navigate the digital information space.

“Media organizations and editors should foster newsroom cultures that are not only innovative but also deeply rooted in ethics and transparency,” he said.

He stated that the Government is willing to engage, support and listen to concerns within the media industry in Zambia.

“I would like to commend MISA Zambia, the organizers of this conference, for their consistent efforts in championing a free, independent and professional media landscape in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, MISA Zambia Chairperson, Lorraine Chisanga called on stakeholders to invest in digital media literacy, ethical AI awareness, and reforms in journalism training.

Zambia will on 3rd May 2025, join the rest of the globe in commemorating World Press Freedom Day.

This year’s theme is “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”.
