TOBACCO SALES EXCEED US$104.9 MILLION, BOOSTING SECTOR GROWTH, ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION

Zambia’s tobacco sector has recorded more than US$104.9 million in sales, reflecting continued growth in the industry and reinforcing the crop’s contribution to the economy.

According to latest figures released by Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ), a total of 51,959,203.91 kilograms of tobacco have been traded across different tobacco types.

Flue Cured Virginia tobacco accounted for the largest share of production and earnings, recording 44,446,442.91 kilograms sold at an average price of US$1.97 per kilogram, translating into a total value of US$87,342,421.89.

According to the Board, Air Cured Burley tobacco recorded a volume of 7,512,761 kilograms at an average price of US$2.35 per kilogram, generating a total value of US$17,629,037.36.

“The total value realized from tobacco sales stands at US$104,971,459.25, with a combined volume of 51,959,203.91 kilograms traded,” the Board said.

The figures demonstrate the continued importance of tobacco as a major cash crop and a significant contributor to livelihoods and economic activity.

This development comes as the sector continues to attract attention for its contribution to agricultural exports and income generation within Zambia.

The 2025/2026 tobacco marketing season officially opened on 13th April, 2026, and is expected to close in September.

TBZ aims to achieve a target of 80 million kilograms of tobacco in 2026 from 72 million kilograms recorded in the previous season.
