Government says Zambia’s maize seed exports have expanded across Africa and into European markets.
Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa indicated that maize seed production rose from 86,212 metric tonnes in 2022 to 94,355 metric tonnes in 2024.
Mr. Mweetwa added that exports also saw a significant increase from 24,045 metric tonnes in 2022 to 52,904 metric tonnes in 2024.
He described the growth as a positive step in strengthening Zambia’s agricultural sector and boosting its position in regional and international seed markets.
Mr. Mweetwa said during deliberations, Cabinet acknowledged the vital role of maize seed production in Zambia’s agricultural sector.
“There are currently 16 active maize seed-producing companies in Zambia, including SeedCo, Zamseed, Bayer, Corteva, Synergy, Western Seed, Lake Agriculture, Klein Karoo, Afriseed, Advanta, Kamano, Kariba, AMAC, ETG Seeds, Kagezi Seeds, and Zambezi Seeds.”
“These companies partner with out-growers for efficient seed production, and many of these farmers have invested in irrigation infrastructure to support their operations,” Mr. Mweetwa said.
Mr. Mweetwa noted that maize seed accounts for more than 60 percent of the total seed produced in the country, followed by legume crops such as soybeans, groundnuts, and beans.
