POWER DISRUPTIONS BEHIND LUSAKA WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTIONS

Government has attributed the temporary water supply interruptions being experienced in some parts of Lusaka and Kafue districts to power supply disruptions caused by extreme weather conditions, particularly the heavy rains recorded in recent days.

Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Eng. Collins Nzovu, said the adverse weather affected electricity infrastructure, which in turn disrupted the operation of key water supply facilities, leading to reduced water production for distribution to consumers.

Eng. Nzovu explained that the power outages impacted the Iolanda and Kaseba Water Treatment Plants in Kafue, resulting in water shortages in areas connected to the Kafue water supply system, despite the plants being technically ready for operation.

“Government is pleased to inform the public that engineers from Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) and ZESCO Limited have been working collaboratively and tirelessly to address the situation.”

“As of this morning, power supply to both the Iolanda and Kaseba Water Treatment Plants has been successfully restored, and water production has since resumed,” he said.

The Minister stressed that engineers will continue to closely monitor the systems to ensure stable operations and a progressive improvement in water supply as normalcy is restored.

“As a precautionary public health measure, LWSC will continue to prioritize the available water supply to critical institutions such as hospitals and other essential public service facilities until full supply is restored,” Eng. Nzovu said.
He added that water supply to residential areas will be rationed during this period to ensure sustainability of supply.

“Government, through LWSC, remains in close coordination with the power utility and other relevant stakeholders to expedite ongoing works aimed at ensuring stable and reliable power supply to all affected water facilities.”

“Government assures members of the public of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding access to clean and safe water for all citizens. Members of the public are encouraged to use the available water responsibly during this period and to rely on official communication channels for accurate and timely updates,” Eng. Nzovu urged.
