OVER 45,000 GROWERS REGISTER WITH TBZ AS TOBACCO CULTIVATION EXPANDS

Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) has disclosed that over 45,000 tobacco growers have so far registered with the Board, cultivating a combined total of 41,324 hectares of land.

TBZ Corporate Affairs and Communications Manager, Lee Haamunji, said the milestone underscores the Board’s commitment to promoting tobacco production in Zambia while enhancing the livelihoods of thousands of small-scale farmers.

“As of today, a total of 45,420 growers have registered with the Board, cultivating an impressive 41,324 hectares of land. In line with the Tobacco Act No. 10 of 2022, tobacco is a regulated crop in Zambia, and all growers are required by law to register with the Tobacco Board of Zambia.”

“This registration ensures that growers have access to support services, including training, extension services, and market access, ultimately contributing to improved quality and productivity,” Mr. Hamunji explained.

He said TBZ’s regulatory role is key to promoting sustainable farming practices, protecting the environment, and ensuring compliance with international standards.

Mr. Haamunji encouraged all tobacco growers to register and actively participate in the growth of the industry.

“The Board is working closely with stakeholders, including government agencies, farmers’ organizations, and the private sector, to create a conducive environment for tobacco production and trade,” he added.

He reaffirmed the Board’s dedication to supporting growers, improving agricultural practices, and enhancing market access to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
“The Board’s efforts are geared towards increasing production volumes, improving quality, and promoting Zambia’s tobacco on the global market,” Mr. Hamunji added.
