EASTERN COMPOL SATISFIED WITH PROGRESS OF LUMEZI CDF POLICE STATION UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Eastern Province Commissioner of Police has expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the construction of a modern police station in Lumezi District, being funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

The project is being implemented by Lumezi Town Council, which has contracted the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to construct the facility at a total cost of K3.6 million, financed using the 2024 and 2025 CDF allocations.

Prior to his tour of the facility, Mr. Mweemba paid a courtesy call on Lumezi Acting District Commissioner Malvin Malasha where he said that he is in the district to appreciate works of his officers and construction works of the police station and a police post.

Lumezi Town Council Assistant Public Relations Officer, Irvin Muyumbwa informed the Commissioner that construction works at the facility are ongoing and anticipated to be completed by March, 2026.

Mr. Muyumbwa said it is the desire of the local authority to handover the police station to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal security by mid this year in order to enhance security in the district.

“Subject to approval by the Provincial Constituency Development Fund Committee, the Local Authority intends to procure furniture for the police station before it can be commissioned for use,” he said.

And speaking after touring the construction site, Commissioner Robertson Mweemba commended Government for investing in infrastructure aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of police officers.

“So far so good. From our tour, we have seen what Government is doing by putting up this building to ensure that officers are well catered for in terms of the offices for,” he said.

He noted that the facility is nearing completion and that officers are expected to relocate to the new police station once works are finalized.

“I know very soon my officers will be moving here, according to the briefing we have received. In short, we are happy,” Commissioner Mweemba added.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, however, appealed to the authorities to also consider constructing housing units for officers to complement the new police station.

“I know this building has come up, I am humbly requesting the authorities that may be they can have houses for the police officers so that as the building is being commissioned, also houses are in place, otherwise, so far so good, I am happy,” he stated.

Once completed, the Lumezi Police Station will comprise two juvenile holding cells for male and female, two adult holding cells for male and female, traffic department among others.

The modern police station is expected to enhance security service delivery in Lumezi District and surrounding areas.
